Kansas Notes

Galena and Riverton are so small that practically speaking any traveler-oriented business would have to be on Route 66.  A local resident confirmed that Jerry’s DX gas station was on Route 66 in Riverton.

It is not quite so safe to make a similar assumption for Baxter Springs since I have seen two different matchcovers, one a gas station and one a car dealer, that were located on 12th Street which was US Highway 166. Therefore matchcovers from Baxter Springs are included if they have the highway number of 66 printed on them or are from traveler-oriented businesses located on Military Avenue. Byrd’s Drive Inn was known to be on Military although the matchcover does not say.  The Dairy-E Drive-In was at the corner of Willow and 2nd where Route 66 makes a turn into Military. The Ranch House Café mentions the “Port of Entry” which would likely place it on Route 66 too.
